While mold can actually come in many different colors and varieties, the dark fuzzy spots that crop up inside homes are usually easy to take care of without much issue, especially when addressed quickly. However, when left unaddressed, mold can damage and permanently discolor materials that they’ve attached to, as well as negatively impact the health of anyone in the home. In fact, according to healthcare professionals over on Healthline, overexposure to mold can lead to infection, lung inflammation, and other symptoms.

Mold thrives in dark, moist, and warm environments, which means that issues in certain lesser trafficked areas of the home can easily get out of hand. If you experience any of the following, schedule a mold inspection to find the root of the problem:

Family members develop health issues such as eye irritation, persistent coughs, or asthma flare-ups

A damp or musty smell develops in the home

Wallpaper or paint begins to warp or bubble

Recent flood or leaks are discovered

Homeowners can keep mold at bay by reducing humidity in their homes, maintaining good ventilation, and cleaning spills quickly. In addition, check and clean out these areas to cover some of mold’s best hiding spots inside the home:

Inside Your Attic
One of the most common areas where mold develops in houses is inside attics because they are notoriously dimly lit, poorly ventilated, and prone to excess moisture. The other reason why mold often goes unaddressed in attics is simply because homeowners tend to not spend much time in them, dedicating the area mostly for storage. Roof leaks that commonly spread into attics provide even more access for rain and moisture into the household.

Learn more about addressing attic mold right here!

In Your Basement
Moving from the very top of the house to the very bottom, basements are actually incredibly similar to attics in that they also provide ideal conditions for mold to flourish. In particular, unfinished basements tend to be dark and dedicated in part to storage, causing plenty of obstructions where pests and mold can survive unnoticed. Poor drainage and landscaping that directs water run-off towards the home’s foundation greatly increases the chance for water intrusion and mold development. Consider adding a dehumidifier to reduce moisture in your basement!

For more information about drainage and grading, check out this article from our friends at SodLawn!

Beneath Your Crawl Space
Homes that have crawl spaces also can see plenty of mold buildup due to these spaces being checked so infrequently and due to easy access for water. Crawl spaces can be difficult to access and maneuver in, so preventing mold to develop here in the first place is certainly the best option! Insulate piping, improve ventilation, and consider investing in a crawl space dehumidifier to reduce moisture and discourage mold development before needing to hire a mold remediation expert.

Underneath Flooring, In Walls, and Above the Ceiling
In the case of mold developing underneath flooring, inside walls, and in ceilings, homeowners should be able to detect a clear odor to help locate the source of the issue. Mold inspectors are equipped with special tools to locate moisture such as thermal detectors and moisture meters, but clear water intrusion issues like in poor landscaping or misdirected downspouts are more likely to tip professionals off to where mold may develop.

Around Your Fireplace and Up Your Chimney
Fireplaces and chimneys can get damp when not in use, and the porous nature of bricks means that when mold takes hold, it can be tough to eradicate. Keeping an eye on a home’s exterior is crucial to ongoing maintenance, so regularly review your roof and chimney for signs of leaks or mold growth to stay ahead of these problems. While mold isn’t a fire hazard, leaky chimneys can also increase flammable creosote buildup.

In Your Garage
Garages are known to get cluttered over time, and as vehicles introduce regular run-off, mold is sure to find its way behind boxes and under shelves. To stay ahead of garage mold, homeowners should sweep and clean regularly, reorganize their storage areas periodically, and remove standing water as quickly as possible (mold growth can begin in less than 48 hours!).

Inside Your Vents and Ductwork
Vents are a serious concern for mold growth because, if spores survive in these areas, they can be easily dispersed throughout the home. Vents and ductwork are tough to clean, so rely on remediation experts to remove the problem, and be sure to identify the cause of the problem. Homeowners should also check the condition of their HVAC units for mold due its similar capability of dispersing spores throughout the home. The good news is that HVAC units are much easier for homeowners to clean on their own with some regular attention.

Contact your local NPI home inspector to schedule a mold inspection!
1582Unconventional Ways Your Home Is Signaling That You Have Plumbing Problemshttps://npiweb.com/Blog/Posts/PostId/1579/unconventional-ways-your-home-is-signaling-that-you-have-plumbing-problemsCleaning Tips,Home Inspection,Home Maintenance,SafetyMon, 29 Jan 2024 20:20:00 GMT
4 UNCONVENTIONAL WAYS YOUR HOME IS SIGNALING THAT YOU HAVE PLUMBING PROBLEMS
January 8, 2024 | Home Maintenance, Cleaning Tips, Home Inspection, Safety | ceiling, walls, mold, plumbing

When discovering that any of your home’s key systems aren’t functioning as they are supposed to, some signs of damage or failure are more obvious than others. With that said, homes constantly signal to their homeowners that issues are cropping up just beneath the surface. Most people, unfortunately, are unaware of these common signs and what they mean.

Homes are designed to satisfy a large number of needs in order to function as they should, but one force that architects constantly battle while designing homes is water. Water intrusion can spread rapidly to other home systems, damaging high-ticket appliances and electronics while also potentially leading to health problems for families. Plumbing leaks are certainly a major issue for homeowners, but you may not want to wait for a pipe to burst in order to take action.

Instead, keep an eye out for these unconventional signs that your home is having plumbing problems!

1. Your Lawn is Too Green, Too Thick, and Too Wet
It may be surprising for some, but one way to discover plumbing issues within a home is actually through looking at its exterior landscaping. Healthy lawns should grow evenly, but homes can spring leaks in their drainage systems, which leads to discharged water escaping into their lawns. Excess water released along the main drain through a break or through degradation will actually send tons of nutrients that greatly enriche the lawn - but only to a limited area.

This leads to uneven thickness, inconsistent color, and in some cases, even pooling water or sunken areas. Property inspectors or plumbing professionals can perform sewer scan inspections that help identify the cause of a break within these lines, as well as an approximate location to determine the extent of damage. Repair or replacement of these buried sewer lines requires excavation of the lawn, so confirming damage and locating the source of the break helps limit cost and duration of these repairs.

2. Your Wallpaper and Paint are Bubbling or Peeling
Wallpaper and paint can peel or bubble for many reasons, including humidity and moisture accumulation. A home’s plumbing system involves an intricate network of piping and supply lines that run throughout the house. This means that sinks, toilets, and showers that have insufficient or eroded caulking can lead to water stains on the ceiling for the floor beneath, and corroded or leaking pipes can cause moisture build-up within the walls.

Ceilings and walls can also develop brown flecks of mold due to moisture from plumbing or roofing leaks. Signs of mold can mean a major issue within the walls as well, and considering the possible health repercussions of overexposure to mold, these sorts of leaks should be addressed as quickly as possible. Read more on the dangers of mold from experts over at Healthline!

3. You Find Some New House Guests
Few people want to share their spaces with unwanted rodents or insects, but animals endlessly search for shelter and food throughout the year, and if they can gain access into the home, they will take advantage of that opportunity. Broken sewage lines can draw mice and rats to a home, and these critters can have an easier time creating access points into a home if there are areas already weakened by water damage.

When setting traps, hiring an exterminator, or otherwise dealing with home invaders, it’s important to correct the source of intrusion so that new guests don’t take their place. Learn more about countering pests right here!

4. Your Wallet Is Getting Lighter
Plumbing issues can be identified by knowing where to look and understanding how a home’s systems work overall. However, sometimes a home can have plumbing issues that are tough to spot and difficult to hear. To a homeowner, some plumbing issues can be practically invisible, until they get their water bill.

Running toilets, leaky faucets, and appliances that aren’t functioning properly will reduce water efficiency in a home, and leaking pipes can cause a dramatic jump in costs. Homeowners that see a sudden change in their utility bills should take a closer look at all of their appliances and listen for sounds of running water to start to identify the issue.

At National Property Inspections, our expert property inspectors are trained to seek out any issues with all of a home’s key systems. Book an inspection with your local NPI home inspector today!
1579The 5 Steps for Planning a Home Additionhttps://npiweb.com/Blog/Posts/PostId/1578/the-5-steps-for-planning-a-home-additionCleaning Tips,Home Inspection,Home Maintenance,SafetyMon, 22 Jan 2024 20:16:00 GMT
THE 5 STEPS FOR PLANNING A HOME ADDITION
January 22, 2024 | Home Maintenance, Home Inspection | office, attic, basement, garage, HVAC, electrical, real estate

Everyone wants to find their dream home. Sometimes, that dream house might be out of reach because of price or location. Other times, that dream house just doesn’t exist - yet!

If your family is expanding beyond their current space, or if changes in your lifestyle require more from your home, the answer may not necessarily be to find a new place to live. Instead, additions are a great way for homeowners to expand their homes into a space that better fits their needs. If you just love your neighborhood or you want to create your dream home without moving, here are the five steps to consider for planning a home addition.

Step 1: Ask Yourself Why You’d Like to Add On to Your Home
While there are many great reasons to plan a home addition, the process comes with its fair share of drawbacks. First is the cost, which can vary widely depending on the type of addition and sometimes even approach the original price of the home. Additionally, the process of building a home addition can take a lot of time, some of which will include moving out temporarily or sharing space with building crews throughout the day.

If you’re considering an addition because you need more space, maybe finishing your attic or basement would be a better route. Both of these spaces can make great home offices, and a basement can be easily configured into a private apartment for guests or for an additional rental income in the future.

Another perfectly valid reason to invest in an addition is to simply improve your quality of life at home. Expand or add a garage for additional parking, build out a sunroom for extra lounging space, or build up an entirely new floor to vastly increase your liveable square footage and increase your ROI. Answering the “why” before you get started can help ensure the addition you imagine will truly satisfy your needs.

Step 2: Determine Your Available Budget
Once you have your mind made up, take some time to determine the budget you’re willing to devote to the project. Total costs vary based on the type of addition, the scale and size, and the materials you’re planning to use, so do your due diligence to get an idea of what your desired addition might cost. When possible, compare costs with homes in your area that are around the same age as yours. Depending on your location, some materials may be harder to come by, and during times when supply chain disruptions are frequent, time delays may need to be considered.

Some homeowners may have enough money set aside to devote to a home improvement project like a home addition, but for others, consider what kind of loans might be available to you. Remember: costs can change even during the build due to unforeseen complications. When possible, it’s best to have a sizeable buffer in case a project goes considerably over budget.

Step 3: Check with Your Local Building Authority
Although you’ll likely check back when your build team is in place, it may be worthwhile to check in with your local build authority to confirm whether your planned addition is even possible. In many areas, building towards the road will have special restrictions, building over important utility access points can lead to major hassle down the line, and zoning laws may dictate how and where additions can be made.

Financially, there is also a high likelihood that you will need to purchase permits based on what you discover here. Factoring in as much as possible early on will give you the best opportunity to set a reasonably accurate budget to help you determine whether an addition is for you. Learn more about how zoning laws might affect your home right here!

Step 4: Contact a Builder, Contractor, or Architect
Finally, when you’re ready to get going it is vitally important to create a home renovation team that you trust. Often, this will mean finding a general contractor who will end up coordinating specialists fit for the job. If possible, prioritize a contractor with previous experience working on home additions - even better if they specialize in your specific type of addition!

Finding the right contractor for you can be tough, so don’t hold back on research during this step. Listen to recommendations from friends and family, look up reviews, and find out how long they’ve been working as a contractor. More experience and a good reputation is usually a great way to establish confidence, but consider how well you might work together, too. Building a home addition is a massive collaborative effort, so if your personalities do not mesh, it could lead to some unnecessary bumps in the road down the line.

After speaking with a couple contractors, you’ll get bids for your addition, project timelines, and opinions on whether they think your plan is feasible within your budget. If not, now is a time to rethink your options and potentially head back to the drawing board. On the other hand, if you find a contractor that seems like a fit with a great bid, you’re off to the races!

Step 5: Consider Any Oversights
Getting started with your addition is exciting, but it’s important to take a moment for last considerations before giving the green light, starting with where you’ll be living during the renovation. Some additions that are minor may allow you and your family to continue living in the home for the entirety of construction, but for some major overhauls, staying with a friend or family member may be the way to go. According to building experts at The Spruce, new additions can sometimes take months to complete, so opting to rent during this time frame will be another expense to add to your budget.

Prior to construction, it may also be smart to order a property inspection to get a lay of your home as it is. A home inspection is the best way to get a summary of a house’s condition and can help homeowners identify urgent repairs before a costly breakdown occurs. With a considerable amount of money dedicated towards a home addition construction, an emergency repair or replacement to the bundle at the same time would be best avoided. Additionally, your inspector can potentially refer you to an electrician or HVAC specialist to advise on whether your current setup will be able to handle the extra space.

Lastly, most homeowners who plan an addition will likely want to stick around for a while, so checking in with the neighbors beforehand as a common courtesy is heavily recommended, especially when an addition presses toward their property. Getting those affected to sign-off on the project early on should help make your home addition plan go as smoothly as possible.

Is a full home addition a bit too extreme at the moment? Read here for some thoughts on starting a little library in your neighborhood! On one hand, it’s wonderful to reconnect with loved ones, especially those that live far away. On the other hand, getting a busy home in order can feel like an intimidating task after a year of balancing a demanding work schedule along with messy pets, and maybe kids with their own affinity for chaos. In preparation for the holidays, here are a few extra things that you can do to go above and beyond making your out-of-town guests feel welcome!

Check On Your Roof’s Stability
One pet peeve that is so common for guests is lack of decent parking. Whatever system that’s worked for your family throughout the rest of the year likely will have to change at least a bit once a new vehicle is introduced. So, unless you’re blessed with a larger-than-average parking situation, consider thinking ahead for some alternatives that allow extra room for guests.

The common holiday struggle of juggling cars in the driveway is exactly why some considerate guests may take it upon themselves to use some sorely underutilized parking areas - such as the space on top of your roof. What many fail to realize is roofs are left tragically unused by the majority of homeowners. Their surface area is easily large enough to house the family vehicle, whether you drive a GMC Yukon or a sleigh with eight to nine tiny reindeer.

Of course, the one issue with this parking space is that homeowners can be neglectful of their roofs. Between loose shingles and the build up of moss and algae due to moisture, roofs can commonly see their lifespans shortened if certain issues are left unaddressed. This leaves more room for water intrusion and increasingly unstable footholds for roof pedestrians. According to home maintenance professionals over at This Old House, water damage due to a leaky roof is actually one of the most costly issues homeowners face.

Checking up on your roof’s condition through a home maintenance inspection with a residential inspection professional, or even conducting a few DIY roof maintenance activities on your own may be wise in preparation for your holiday guests.

Ensure Easy Chimney Access
When it comes to welcoming your guests into your home, it’s also wise to start off with a good first impression. Entryways and mudrooms have a tendency to gather clutter over time with coats, boots, and bags all vying for their own convenient resting places. Because of this, it’s understandable that these spaces can become blindspots for home organization efforts - but this common issue doesn’t have to become a hurdle during the holiday season!

Try to set some time aside to reorganize all of your entryways, find new permanent homes for any clutter or stray items, and consider developing a new system to keep these areas that way in the meantime. We’ve previously discussed the benefits of doing this before the school year, but these concepts can come in handy any time of the year if your home is in need of a bit of a reset!

On the subject of cluttered entryways, one route that is almost universally ignored is, of course, the chimney! Climbing down the flue at late hours of the night (while often battling slippery rooftop snow and ice) is tough enough on its own before encountering the dust, soot, and sometimes other obstructions like twigs, bird’s nests, or even living animals. Did you know that neglected chimneys naturally fill up with flammable materials, and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends that chimneys be inspected every year (check out their informational video on this subject)?

Before the holidays, take some time to clean up all of your entryways and order a chimney inspection! For more information on the importance of chimney maintenance, here are a few things that can go wrong when left ignored for too long.

Consider Some New Home Decor
Finally, nothing makes a guest feel welcome quite like some nice, nostalgic, cozy holiday decor. Take some time to hang stockings by the chimney, add lights to your front doorway, and wrap garland around your banister. Or go all out with the holiday decorating traditions your family enjoys! Celebrating the holidays with your guests can look very different from household to household, but those that make the effort to clearly switch things up will have a lot more luck ushering in some yuletide glee.

Now concerning snacks, it is safe to assume that your guests will get a little peckish when you’re not around. Allowing them free reign to rummage through your cupboards can feel invasive. Instead, leave out a plate at night (preferably near the chimney) and add your choice of midnight treats (maybe a few sugar cookies and a cup of milk, for example). Ultimately, there’s no exact formula for creating a festive home. But if you’re looking for more ideas and inspiration, here are a few more options to ensure a very Merry Christmas.

Still wondering if your home is ready for the rigor of your upcoming winter shindig? Contact your local NPI Inspector to see how they can help prep your home for the holidays!
1564Setting the Stage for Your Home Sale: DIY Home-Staging Tipshttps://npiweb.com/Blog/Posts/PostId/1562/setting-the-stage-for-your-home-sale-diy-home-staging-tipsCleaning Tips,DIY,Home MaintenanceMon, 27 Nov 2023 18:53:00 GMT
SETTING THE STAGE FOR YOUR HOME SALE: DIY HOME-STAGING TIPS
November 27, 2023 | Home Maintenance, DIY, Cleaning Tips | kitchen, living room, bedroom, bathroom, windows, floors, painting, home seller, real estate

When putting your home on the market, you obviously want to get as much out of the sale as you can. Real estate agents are professionals at accentuating the strengths of a home while bringing any flaws into perspective, and home staging is there to reinforce these efforts through what potential buyers actually see and experience during a tour.

According to a National Association of REALTORS (NAR) Research Group’s 2023 Study, 81% of buyers’ agents said that home staging made it easier to visualize the property as their future home. Despite this, many home sellers skip this step in order to save on costs. Since the largest investment most people will make is their home, home staging is well worth the cost and time commitment.

3 Options for Home-Staging
Home sellers can go in a few different directions when planning to stage their homes, and each has their own strengths and weaknesses:

The Do-It-Yourself Option
By far the most cost-effective, albeit demanding option is going the DIY route. There are tons of things that can be done to stage a home better which sellers can easily implement quickly and at a low cost, However, due to limited experience in real estate, it is possible that these quick changes can do more harm than good without expert advice. Still, depending on comfort and home maintenance experience, sellers should always look at doing some DIY home staging.

Ask Your Agent
Real Estate Agents know what buyers are looking for and what might turn them away from a purchase. For staging a home, sellers should draw from their agents as much as they can and lean on their perspectives when possible. Some agents may even offer up things like alternative furniture to borrow, welcoming artwork, and other resources to help present the home in its best light.

Hire a Professional Home Stager
Finally, for the most hands-off approach, sellers should look into hiring a professional home stager that works in their area. Minor repairs, temporary decorations, and new interior furniture orientation all designed to ensure selling a home at its highest possible value can all be expected when working with these servicers at reasonable rates.

All of these options will improve a seller's experience while their house is on the market, but let’s tackle some of the most effective DIY home staging tips for those looking to maximize their ROI!

Target the High Impact Areas
The first thing to keep in mind when thinking about staging a home for sale is that you don’t have to fix every single problem you have with your property. The best thing that a homeowner can do is to focus on the “high impact” areas of their house, in other words, the places that most influence a buyer’s decision on whether to make an offer. Within the home, this means the living room, the kitchen, the master bedroom, and (to a lesser extent) the dining room. If these areas are all attractive and inviting, offers are bound to come quickly!

In general, one change that may be worth making throughout these areas is to switch from carpet to hardwood flooring wherever possible. Carpets can get worn and stained, and it’s often replaced or removed when new homeowners move in anyway. Hardwood floors, on the other hand, have widespread appeal, and that’s what home staging is really all about. Remove aspects of the home that might turn buyers away, and replace them with neutral or commonly preferred alternatives.

Make Your Available Space Look Usable
Next, sellers should always look to accentuate the strengths of their homes, and one way that they often miss out on this is by masking their homes' true size. Large or clunky furniture that fills up a room too much can make a home feel cramped and small. Additionally, rooms that serve more than one purpose (like a laundry room / exercise room) can make a house feel like it’s limited. Switch out that huge couch for one that shows off the floor space, and have each room focus on one purpose in particular to make it clear that potential buyers won’t struggle for breathing room.

Next, homeowners need a lot of storage, but junk rooms do little to impress during open houses. Clear out any finished areas (including attics and basements!) and transform them into temporary offices or reading nooks to emphasize the possibilities. Even if that’s not how these spaces were used, the point of staging is to get the buyer’s mind thinking about what they could do with the home. Storage areas, unfortunately, don’t provide much inspiration.

De-Personalize and Remove Controversy
The best homes become a reflection of the people that live within them, but the fact is that whoever moves in next will have their own style preferences. This means that, although you might have loved your lime green wallpaper, it might be wise to take that down and repaint your living room with some neutral colors. A well-staged home should be like a blank canvas, not a finished work of art where buyers struggle to imagine different options.

It’s for this same reason that agents recommend removing family photos, hobbyist equipment, and toys before showings. All of these are fabulous reflections of whoever lives in the house, but buyers don’t want to see someone else’s home - they want to see their potential home. Features that are distinct and remind buyers of what a home is distracts them from what the home could be in the future.

Clean! Clean! Clean!
Finally - and this might be the most important advice to apply if you weren’t already planning on it - sellers should focus primarily on making their home as clean and fresh as possible! Bathrooms tend to become neglected overtime, windows need to be washed to let light in, and odd lingering odors should be addressed during the home staging process.

For the exterior of the home, consider using a power washer as a quick way to vastly improve curb appeal without investing in a fresh coat of paint. Additionally, it can be a smart investment to purchase a new welcome mat and prioritize the front pathway. A successfully staged home will be fresh, inviting, and full of possibilities. Sellers who opt not to skip on the easy steps like home staging will see this small investment pay dividends after they close.

If you’re looking to sell, have you considered ordering a Pre-Listing Inspection? When watching a scary movie, it’s easy to become frustrated by the classic mistakes and gaffes that the characters make as they bungle their way into the killer’s hands. Although it’s reasonable to assume that the stress and terror of running for your life can keep you from making practical decisions, choices made by horror movie protagonists can be baffling.

In the inevitable case that you end up cornered by a masked, knife-wielding stranger straight out of a slasher movie, you don’t want to fall for the same old slip-ups. To be better prepared, we consulted some of the best minds in home maintenance, organization, and personal fitness for their tips on surviving a scary movie.

How To Tell That You’re In A Scary Movie
Naturally, the first step for surviving a scary movie is to confirm that you are, in fact, living in a scary movie yourself. Although it may seem painfully obvious to audience goers that the characters shouldn’t investigate that noise in the attic, or search their creepy, unfinished basement to reset the breakers, remember that these are just homeowners attempting to perform regular home maintenance tasks.

Some easy signs that may indicate you’re in a horror film include:

It is a dark and stormy night.

You live in a big, old house.

Your neighbors are strange.

You live by or near a cemetery and/or graveyard.

While each factor is not definitive, studies indicate that one or more of these elements appearing in conjunction exponentially increases the chances that you are, in fact, in a scary movie. For more information on identifying whether your home is haunted, check out our previous blog!

On a dark and stormy night, electrical issues have a knack of popping up, plus heavy rains can lead to leaking and mold if left unaddressed. Ask your local NPI inspector about their thermography and mold inspections to keep your home safe and repair costs down!

What Not To Do While In A Scary Movie
Once you’ve confirmed that your cozy night at home will instead be occupied by running from an odd fellow in a hockey mask, there are few things in particular worth avoiding, starting with your cell phone. A natural impulse will always be to call for help, but don’t fall for this trap! Whether your phone is dead, lost, or service is down, simply calling for help never works in a scary movie. In fact, more often not, the time spent searching for a phone is what leads someone to their demise.

On the other end of things, every natural impulse in a survival scenario would suggest that there is strength in numbers. Despite this, if you find yourself in a scary movie you will undoubtedly suggest splitting up, or perhaps you’ll encounter a strong desire to run off and investigate that peculiar sound coming from the basement on your own. Resist this! Don’t say, “I’ll be right back.” Don’t be curious. Remember all of those times that you screamed at your television screen watching those cheap horror flicks and choose to stay with the group instead.

Avoiding pitfalls isn't all that it takes to survive scary movie scenarios, however. Survival and safety around the home is best accomplished by thinking ahead and taking preventive measures.

Scary Movie Survival Tips

Start with Run-Worthy Footwear
While there are many strategies that homeowners can employ to assuage a horror movie scenario, filling a house with Kevin McCallister-caliber traps and tripwires are impractical for anyone wanting to live comfortably. A far more sensible start should be to secure a pair of tennis shoes that are durable enough to handle all sorts of debris and conditions.

Homeowners are sure to need sensible footwear when performing regular maintenance tasks anyway, whether they are cleaning their gutters, or spending time in the garden. The benefits are aplenty, so don’t catch yourself stumbling out of your flip flops from a crazed slasher’s pursuit.

Reduce Unnecessary Clutter
By October 31st, the school year is in full swing. Naturally, it can be hard to keep a house clean and organized while balancing work with the kids’ school schedules. With that said, homeowners will regret a cluttered, messy home when they discover that their Halloween night is going to be produced by A24.

Cut down on the number of dolls in your home (they are prone to possessions), and minimize tripping hazards when maneuvering up and down any staircases. Slips and falls are always dangerous, plus a tidy home and workspace is proven to improve productivity and mental wellness! A healthy workout routine will help you create some extra distance during your chases down those long, dark hallways.

One great way to make your exercise schedule more attainable and convenient is to remodel that spare room into a home gym! If this was your first year in your new home, you may have noticed some of its more interesting quirks or “features.” Some houses seem to groan when the wind hits them just right, others might creak whenever the mood is right. These are just “house noises” that you’re slowly growing accustomed to…right?

Many odd occurrences in the home can be explained away with a little bit of investigation, but when attempts at rationality come up short, it can be difficult to brush off the unexplained. As we all know, the Halloween season is best known as one time each year that the barrier between the material world and the spiritual world is its thinnest. In other words, if you have your suspicions that your house just might be haunted, you better figure it out now.

To aid you in your investigation, we’ve placed our best paranormal researchers on the job to identify the surefire evidence that proves your house is haunted. Reader beware: only proceed if you want to know the truth about the noise that is coming from your attic.

The Truth About Cold Spots
It’s a common sight in movies whenever ghosts are near. A shiver is sent down your spine, or a chill in the air suddenly lets you see your breath. Many paranormal enthusiasts believe that these instances are not just Hollywood run amuck, but real evidence of spirits drawing energy from their former homes. If your homes have extreme fluctuations of temperature or unexplained cold pockets within your home, you just might be dealing with a ghost.

On the outside chance that ghosts aren’t involved with your home’s heating issues, there are a few home defects that could also influence this issue. Poor insulation, inadequate sealing around doors and windows, and inconsistent filter cleaning can all cause homes to run colder than expected. Keeping a home properly insulated and ventilated is important for anyone wanting to live comfortably, and getting it right can have a major cost-savings benefit as well!

Read more about how 90% of US homes are under-insulated according to insulation experts over at Sealed. For more information on ventilation, read on here!

When You Smell Something…Fishy
The spirits that inhabit your home once had their own lives. They cooked their favorite foods, had their own pets, and they may have had their unique habits such as smoking a cigar, or wearing a particular kind of perfume. When moving into a new home, it may be unnerving to discover that strange odors only attributable to former owners seem to be lingering. In these instances, many supernatural researchers believe the spirits of those that have come before might be reaching out.

In situations where phantom smells aren’t a result of spectral activity, there is a chance that lingering smells could be resolved from a deep cleaning of your new home! Carpet, paint, and tile floors are just a few things in homes that can hold onto unwanted scents such as cigarette smoke long after previous owners have moved out. Replacing your carpet, picking a fresh coat of paint, and then tackling any inherited appliances should be a top concern for a clean start.

Note: Did you know that strange smell could be coming from your water? Here’s how to take care of any odd scents.

Flickering Lights and Failing Electronics
Flickering lights are a tell-tale sign of ghoulish encounters, whether it’s a spectral prankster at work or the result of a spirit’s presence drawing from a home’s electrical systems. EMF Meters are a standard tool used by ghost hunters and other paranormal investigators to detect any abnormal electromagnetic activity within an area, and many believe that these tools can be used for direct communication with paranormal presences.

If you’re looking for any alternative answers to electrical issues, flickering lights can also be caused by things like wire corrosion or loose/poor connections. Electrical issues can be serious fire hazards and should be addressed by a licensed electrician as soon as possible. To get started, an infrared inspection from a licensed home inspector can uncover overheated and overloaded outlets and appliances with ease.

Learn more about some of NPI’s specialty inspection services here!

Creaks, Groans, and Noises in the Night
When sharing space with ghosts, homeowners would probably prefer their ghost to be more of a Casper the friendly ghost-type, rather than a Beetlejuice-Beetlejuice-variety. This is why those first few nights in a new home can be particularly unnerving if unexpected noises start coming from the walls, the basement, or the attic. Are those noises just “the house settling,” or did that creak seem a bit too close to a groan for comfort?

Outside from ghouls or goblins, there are many other things that can cause a home to make distracting noises. Materials in homes naturally bloat and compress throughout the year as the weather changes, which can all cause harmless creaking and grumbling. Hissing or humming electrical outlets or piping could mean any number of problems, and suspect gas leaks should be addressed as soon as possible.

If you haven’t located your water and gas shut-off valves yet, now is the time to find them. Leaks can cause compiling damage if not resolved quickly, so it’s important for homeowners to familiarize themselves with their home systems before an emergency occurs.

You Can’t Shake the Feeling You’re Being Watched
Finally, if after “debunking” what seemed to be a former mountain of evidence that your home is haunted still leaves you feeling unsettled, don’t discount that feeling of being watched. As we all know, ghosts have this frustrating tendency to remain imperceptible to the naked eye. Due to this fact many people claim to notice shadows or movement out of the corner of their eye on occasion, and in other instances they might experience a pesky, disquieting sensation when looking into the darker corners of their home.

The truth is that if you feel like you’re being watched, you probably are! Though, it might not be exactly what you were expecting during the Halloween season. Many homes are haunted by rats, bats, spiders, and termites, which often go unnoticed by homeowners until long after inflicting serious damage to many of a house’s key systems. While there are many strategies that homeowners can employ to keep their homes free from unwanted guests, it may be wise to have a trusted pest control professional in mind when things get out of hand.

Do You Suspect that Your Home Might be Haunted?
Rather than contacting your local vicar, consider starting with a home inspection to figure out what makes your house tick!
1529Tricky and Easily Overlooked Areas of the Home That You Should Clean Todayhttps://npiweb.com/Blog/Posts/PostId/1537/tricky-and-easily-overlooked-areas-of-the-home-that-you-should-clean-todayCleaning Tips,DIY,Home MaintenanceMon, 25 Sep 2023 21:10:00 GMT
TRICKY AND EASILY OVERLOOKED AREAS OF THE HOME THAT YOU SHOULD CLEAN TODAY
September 25, 2023 | Home Maintenance, DIY, Cleaning Tips | kitchen, living room, bathroom, plumbing, electrical, appliances

Managing to keep an entire home clean is no easy task. Between doing the laundry, vacuuming the rugs, cleaning the dishes, and taking out the trash, there are plenty of hours in the day already dedicated to housekeeping. Naturally, things fall through the cracks, and certain items in the home are naturally overlooked. The problem is that certain items that might have been easily cleaned in the past can prove a much more difficult task if neglected for too long. If you are interested in being proactive about keeping your home clean, consider taking another look at these often-ignored home items.

Spend Some Extra Time in the Kitchen
Do people spend a lot of time cleaning their kitchen? Of course they do. Do people still overlook a few areas in their kitchen due to inconvenience or lack of awareness? Absolutely! Kitchens can become one of the grimiest, dirtiest areas in a house if homeowners aren’t consistent about their cleaning habits due to the many kinds of messes and spills that are bound to happen while cooking. It’s when only the surface areas are taken care of that problems begin to pile up.

Starting with the dishwasher, some may think that this appliance stays clean simply by performing its function. But those who have noticed distracting smells or extra spots on their dishes are probably experiencing the effects of a dirty dishwasher. As a general practice, rinsing off plates and silverware in the sink prior to running a cycle is a great way to limit food buildup, and filters should be cleaned regularly based on how frequently the dishwasher is used. Additionally, running the washer with any dishwasher cleaner according to its instructions around once a month should correct some of those pesky problems with dirty dishes.

Regarding other mostly out-of-sight areas of the kitchen, many homeowners tend to completely ignore the spaces beneath their dishwasher and other appliances, the cracks between the stove and the counter, and on top of their fridge. To clean underneath larger items without moving them, simply use something like a ruler or other skinny implement to knock loose any debris, then choose a flat vacuum attachment or broom to take care of the rest. Accumulating dust can cause damage to refrigerator coils over time, which means that incorporating regular cleaning into a proactive home maintenance routine should extend the life of these pricey items.

Treat Your Electronics Well
Considering the amount of attention some family TVs and computers get, these items get very little TLC. Smudges on their screens and dust accumulation naturally add up over time and can affect these device’s performance, but cleaning electronics can make many homeowners nervous. To clean screens without causing lasting damage, start by using a dry cloth to dust, then using a screen-safe cleaner. Note: Apply screen cleaners to the cloth rather than to a screen directly to avoid damage.

To clean a television’s remote control, start by removing any batteries, then use a damp cloth for basic cleaning. It may be necessary to use a cotton swab or a toothpick to address any debris caught between buttons or in any other crevices. Compressed air is also a great option for getting at any vents or other difficult-to-access areas on the body of a television that are bound to gather dust over time.

Take Another Look At Your Faucets
Somewhat similar to the reasons why dishwashers can be neglected, faucets and shower heads are mainly involved in cleaning other items, so it might be odd to think about them getting dirty. With that said, these items are some of the items in a home that cause the most shocking reactions once homeowners finally take notice of how bad they’ve gotten. With the build up of mold, mildew, or other debris which can lead to diminished water pressure and distorted streams, shower heads and faucets certainly benefit from regular cleaning.

For both items, one common remedy involves using a mixture of vinegar and water to break down the debris that’s built up on faucet and shower head exteriors. Try using a plastic bag to hold the mixture, then wrap it around the faucet or shower head. This solution should be left in place anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours depending on the severity of grime that needs to be broken up. Afterwards, simply run some water for a few minutes to clean out the remaining vinegar, and viola!

In addition to these cleaning strategies, regularly unscrewing and rinsing out a faucet’s aerator is a great habit to get into. Sometimes, appliances and systems that aren’t performing up to expectations can be vastly improved in just a few short steps.

Did you know that, just like proactive cleaning, many of your home’s primary features’ lives can be considerably extended through regularly checking in on their condition? For families with more than one kid, systems of organization that worked perfectly fine during the summer can unravel quickly once hectic mornings and packed after-school schedules dominate daylight hours. No one wants their home to feel chaotic, and nothing builds up that feeling like disorganized clutter.

The best way to combat the seismic shift that accompanies heading back to school is to discover a new rhythm that works for the entire family. Consistency, ease of use, and setting appropriate expectations that the family can keep up in the long term - accomplishing each of these are the keys to developing an efficient home. To avoid that seemingly inevitable shift that turns your home into a disaster zone through the course of the school year, consider adding these organizational tips to your arsenal!

Establish a Doable Routine
In life, some people can find a fondness for spontaneity, taking life by the horns, and pursuing each odd opportunity. For kids, though, this sort of lifestyle will likely create a sense of uncertainty that affects many aspects of their lives. Trying to leave in the morning when one kid has misplaced a shoe, or forgot that they needed to have a permission slip signed? These situations arise because of a complicated lifestyle that isn't ideal, especially for younger kids.

If bedtimes and morning rituals became a little more casual during the summer, establishing a more dependable, defined routine for school will help the family better understand what to expect on a daily basis. These standards might seem small, but this is the necessary start to any solid home organization plan. For younger kids, printing out and hanging a specific schedule for their bedtime and morning routines can be useful as parents help them through their order of operations. Over time, these routines will naturally get easier, and morning routines will become smoother.

As an additional tip: any spare time spent during the previous night to select outfits or pack lunches will contribute to an even smoother routine in the morning. While bedtime routines can be difficult for some, mornings are usually far more frantic for families, as everyone needs to get to school and to work on time.

Conduct “Zone” Warfare
With consistency in mind, a further strategy that can feed on instilling this within the home’s design is zones. One way that disorganization can spread through a home is when people don’t have a clear understanding of where an item lives when they aren’t using it. Should their backpack go in their room when done with homework? By the front door? In the closet? On the floor?

If items are always in the same place, those frantic instances of last minute searches and misplacing crucial materials disappear. For backpacks, a great aid for organization can start with building a “Drop Zone” in the entryway (or mudroom) of the home. A stylish hanger for backpacks, coats, and keys can line the wall immediately where the family enters and exits the home to remove any guesswork in the mornings, and this area can also house a basket or folder for important documents that the parents need to sign or review. Everything in one tidy, consistent location to eliminate confusion.

Another great “zone” to establish might be one dedicated to homework specifically. Pencils, pencil sharpeners, and paper all in one location (ideally separated from areas filled with potential distractions) will eliminate effort from searching for these materials. Items housed in this area are likely to change depending on the student’s age and workload, but developing a working area outside of leisure spaces should instill a more reliable (and hopefully less cluttered) space to support focus.

Separating specific zones that hold enough storage for the items related to that dedicated task should at least contain messes to that area, and make cleaning up easier in the future.

Install a Centralized Command Center
Finally, larger families in particular will benefit from building a command center, dedicated to sorting the schedules of everyone at a glance. Parents who have accidentally overbooked themselves know the struggle that come with delivering their children to various sports events, dance lessons, and musical performances - all somehow occurring on the same day. Avoiding these instances becomes easier through finding a way to take a step back and view the family’s schedules together.

Hang a large calendar in an area that receives plenty of foot traffic (like the kitchen), where each family member has their events posted together. A week-by-week or month-to-month calendar organized in this way, perhaps while color-coding each family member’s events, can allow for quick reminders and a visual sense of how busy a week will be before getting surprised by a packed afternoon on the day.

Adding to this calendar might change as the kids get older by giving them the responsibility to add their own events, and giving them their own personal planners will further teach that personal responsibility. A well-organized home comes through cooperation, setting appropriate expectations, and establishing consistency - which can all start right in the center of the home. Bugs are a part of the diverse and fascinating ecology that lies just outside of our homes, after all, and their roles in pollination and sanitation cannot be overstated. Yes, some have found that the prevailing stigma associated with our many-legged friends to be a tad judgmental and unfair, given their thankless efforts. However, others will contend that while these truths are all well and good, bugs can stay outside of my house and far away from me, thank you very much.

Homes can become infested by a wide range of the creepy and crawly-variety. For homeowners who would like to deal with their bug problems now rather than later and would rather not pay a hefty pest control bill, here are a few DIY solutions for dealing with bugs.

How to Annihilate Ants
Ants are one of the most common home invaders throughout the United States, and they come in many different varieties, from the common pavement ant to the dreaded carpenter ant. Ants aren’t commonly known to bite people like some other bugs (though they can). However, they are known to contaminate food and carry disease. Carpenter ants are particularly troublesome due to their potential to cause serious damage to homes as they create their nests. If you are seeing a larger than normal number of ants in your home, you might have an ant infestation on your hands. Before calling the exterminator, though, there are some possible DIY solutions worth exploring!

Ants tend to be drawn to different kinds of food based on the time of year and type of ant. According to pest experts over at the Family Handyman blog, homeowners can lay out a selection of proteins, sweets, and fatty foods in their home to determine which foods their ants are most drawn to. From there, toxic ant bait that corresponds to these different “diet preferences” can be used to lay waste to any ant colonies that have found their way indoors. For more information on handling ant infestations, check out the rest of the Family Handyman's fabulous article.

How to Clobber Cockroaches
If you have never had to deal with roaches, consider yourself lucky. Cockroaches are one of the most common insects known to invade homes around the world, and, interestingly, they seem to be one of the most common insect-related phobias. Despite not commonly carrying diseases, biting, stinging, or sucking blood, cockroaches somehow climb to the top of most people’s insect “ick” lists.

Award-winning journalist and fellow bug-despiser Rachel Nuwer writes about this phenomenon in a BBC article saying, “...many people suffer from katsaridaphobia, or cockroach phobia…[though the vast majority] never seek help, primarily because they want to do everything possible to avoid even speaking of those creatures.” For anyone interested in seeing many more pictures of these frequent household visitors, check out Rachel’s article!

The best answer to keep cockroaches away is to clean up spills quickly, avoid leaving out food for long periods of time, and take out the garbage in a timely fashion. Cockroaches are known to reproduce extremely quickly, so catching sight of a single one of these critters should trigger homeowners to take action. Chemical bait can be placed under sinks and near trash cans, enticing roaches to bring the toxic food back to their families. This then eliminates the colony.

How to Terminate Termites
For homeowners, the structural damage that termites can cause leads to more nightmares than all of the other insects on this list combined. Knowing the costly harm that can come from termites, this is one infestation where it may be worth contacting the pros rather than relying on DIY remedies. Still, there are options homeowners can take to fight against termites.

The most reliable method for terminating termites is through using boric acid, an ingredient in certain insecticides. Drill holes into infected wood and apply this spray to cracks and other access points to eliminate termites where they’ve established themselves. Another option for a DIY termite trap is simply laying two wetted cardboard pieces on top of one another, leaving it near a termite nest, and allowing the insects to become caught in the material. This method isn’t thought to be as effective or consistent as using high-powered poisons and baits, but can be employed as a supplemental option. Remember, when in doubt with this issue, call a local pest control specialist!

How to Slay Silverfish
Although not the most numerous or harmful insects found in homes, silverfish are nonetheless a common unwanted guest. These insects are incredibly quick and are known to make their homes in moist or humid areas like bathrooms or under sinks (similar to many bugs). Their resilience is also something not to balk at, as scientists trace back their existence to times before even dinosaurs walked the earth. Apparently, humans have been contending with these pests for ages, but modern homeowners may have found a few tricks to help deal with them.

Silverfish are drawn to common household items like glue, carpet fibers, and paint. So, a solid DIY way to catch silverfish is to wet a roll of newspaper and lay it out for a few days. Silverfish are likely to crawl inside the paper and can be disposed of easily. Alternatively, pest experts at Good Housekeeping recommend making use of diatomaceous earth, a white powdery substance said to be harmful to these insects.

How to Smash Spiders
Lastly, spiders might not be the most common infestation since they are known to be mostly solitary creatures. With that said, spider infestations plague many houses across the US. Even if a homeowner doesn’t necessarily consider themselves an “arachnophobe,” chances are that most would prefer to do without too many of these eight-legged companions in their cribs.

To begin a fight against spiders, homeowners should thoroughly vacuum their homes, including under furniture and inside closets. Spiders tend to establish their lairs in seldom-frequented corners of houses, so a committed effort is needed for this step. From there, any pesticides or repellents can work nicely. As a homemade option, essential oils are said to be effective such as lavender, rosemary, and peppermint.

In general, homeowners can work to keep pests out of their homes by doing things like trimming back bushes, and sealing openings to the outdoors. Whether that means spending time at the office or remoting in from a coffee shop across the country, learning how to maximize productivity while capitalizing on opportunities this freedom affords has been an ongoing process for employers and workers alike.

Home offices are coming back into style in a big way, as remote or hybrid workers have searched for ways to increase their at-home productivity. If you are looking to adapt a room in your home to improve your remote working conditions or you’re interested in a revamp of your current workspace, here are a few traits that will make your home office first-class!

1. Select the Right Space
The first and most important aspect you must consider when setting up your home office is the location. Homes are full of distractions, especially if there are kids running around. Ideally, locate an area that is separated from the majority of natural traffic and noise so that you have the opportunity to focus on your work. Additionally, do what you can to separate yourself from home leisure items as much as possible. Television, instruments, or speakers have the potential to divert your focus and drain away productive hours.

Attics and basements tend to create an element of mental separation that lends well towards “resetting” minds from at-home relaxation-mode into work-mode. Considering the mounting evidence of the positive impact people receive from natural lighting (as expert office designers at New Day Office report), make rooms with windows a priority. If the option is available, a roomy attic space with a view is ideal!

2. Find the Right Furniture
With your location sorted, the next most vital aspect of your home office is your furniture, namely your chair. There are many great DIY options that homeowners can look at for saving money during room makeovers. However, considering the amount of time spent in it, your office chair is one accessory worth a little extra investment.

After selecting a nice, ergonomic seat, you have the freedom to get creative with your office depending on the amount of space you’re working with. Couches and extra seating can be beneficial if you anticipate occasional in-person meetings, and lounging spaces may come into use when stumped on a particular subject.

3. Make Technology Your Friend
These days, conducting business in a professional and timely manner is impossible without a reliable computer and a stable internet connection. If working at home is a new prospect, you may need to take stock of your current internet speeds and potentially upgrade to a higher speed plan with your provider. Directly plug your desktop into your router to keep costly disconnects during meetings and calls to a minimum.

For offices that lack direct access to sunlight, consider how you will keep your space well lit. Softer lights are best for sensitive eyes and should look the most natural through a computer camera. With your technical accessories set up, take the time to properly arrange your cords. Unsightly tangles can be a distraction, either directly or subconsciously.

4. Decorate to Match Your Goals
Finally, it’s time to make your home office truly your own! When decorating your workspace, take the time to think through your goals. While concentration is important for a productive space, certain jobs also benefit from creatively inspiring surroundings.

If you are looking for an office space that eliminates all distractions and allows you to maximize your focus, paint your walls neutral colors and apply a minimalist philosophy to your decorations. Alternatively, if maximizing endurance and sustaining through long hours is a concern, prioritize comforting soft color palettes on your walls and add pictures of friends, family, or pets.

Remember to take advantage of vertical spaces through shelving units if space is at a premium as well! Plants (even fake ones) can have a positive psychological impact throughout the workday, and even small points of greenery can have a surprising impact on your room as a whole.

5. Keep Your Space Organized
Perfect home offices don’t stay perfect without the appropriate effort and careful planning. To keep your home office clean and organized, make sure that every regularly used item has a dedicated space where you retrieve and replace it. Workplaces can become cluttered very easily and a chaotic atmosphere will build unnecessary stress. A regular routine of cleanliness and organization should always be a priority.

For your keyboards, keep a compressed air can on hand so that dust and debris doesn’t pile up between the keys. Also when selecting a trash can, be sure to pick one with a cover. Remember, clutter and garbage can be another unwanted distraction! Garbage can covers will help take these things out of mind.

Home offices are a great place for homeowners to express their creativity! By understanding your own needs and tendencies, your home office can become a productive space that even surpasses what can be accomplished in a traditional work setting.

Small home maintenance issues can grow into shocking distractions! Maybe a new shade of paint is the missing ingredient for your living room, or perhaps it’s a new set of countertops that would result in the kitchen of your dreams. While there are many changes that can radically alter the look of a room, there is almost no change as impactful as switching to hardwood floors.

For many new homeowners, installing hardwood floors is at the top of their to-do list. While carpet can provide a feeling of warmth and comfort for a family, any new occupants may see old carpeted areas as a den of decades-old germs and allergens ready to strike. If you haven’t made the switch already, here are a few benefits of hardwood floors, along with some strategies to maintain them.

Advantages of Hardwood Flooring
For any style or color scheme, hardwood flooring is extremely versatile. While interior design can boil down to a matter of taste, nothing matches the dynamic that hardwood floors can bring to a room—and designers swear by them! While certain woods lend themselves well to certain styles, stains and refinishing options can make your hardwood floors fit any concept.

As mentioned earlier, a constant concern for homeowners is the quality of their air. Carpets are known to easily trap dust, dirt, allergens, germs, and other particulate matter. These substances can accumulate and settle, reducing the quality of air within the home (especially for a family with pets). Even flooring options like laminate and tile have grout lines that hardwood floors don’t. Comparatively, hardwood floors are easy to clean and require less maintenance than most other alternatives.

For some homeowners, they may be hesitant to commit to hardwood floors due to their steep price tag. Hardwood floors cost more to install than carpet or tile. However, homeowners that make the switch can benefit from its advantages and may actually save money over time. Hardwood flooring (when well-maintained) has a much longer lifespan than carpet. Depending on the wear and tear experienced by carpet, homeowners will likely need to replace their carpeting every 10 years or so. This also assumes that the carpet won’t be permanently stained and need to be replaced even earlier. Meanwhile, well-maintained hardwood floors can last over 100 years.

Depending on the specific type of wood, hardwood floors are famously durable. Though they can scratch or dent in areas with heavy traffic, this damage can be easily repaired. Worn sections can be re-stained periodically, and the need for full replacements are extremely rare. Between all of these benefits and the resale value added, every homeowner should consider hardwood floors for their next home upgrade.

The Hardwood Floor Care Routine
The best way to take care of your beautiful hardwood floors is to develop a consistent maintenance routine. Incorporate these tasks into your regular home maintenance schedule to keep your hardwood floors looking brand new!

Daily - Dust your floors every day to work towards preventing scratches and scuffs that gradually grow with regular wear and tear. Dusting reduces the presence of allergens and dust that can lead to sickness.

Weekly - Clean your floors with a damp mop and use a cleaner that works with your stain and your wood type. Overcleaning can dull your stain, and cleaners that are too acidic can damage your finish. Be sure to research before selecting the best cleaner for you!

Every Three Months - Polish your floors to reduce minor damage and add a renewing shine. Be sure to sweep or vacuum first, and target water-based polish to avoid introducing toxins into your home.

Once Every 10 Years - Refinish your floors to restore their original appearance. This is the key step for longevity!

A few additional tips: scratches are the number one battle that homeowners with hardwood floors need to combat. High heels and pets with untrimmed nails can cause dings and damage if not regarded with caution. In addition, rugs and placemats can protect highly-trafficked areas or entryways where moisture can collect and cause wood floors to swell.

Remember to schedule an inspection with NPI before any major remodel! Whether it is their garage, their attic space, or their basement, the increasing pace of life has demanded we develop a go-to area for things that don’t have a designated space at the moment. We’ll get to it later, for now, let’s just store it in the closet, or the spare bedroom. This phenomenon has come to be known as the dreaded “junk room.”

Quickly, a junk room’s original intent has been stretched beyond recognition and you’ve got a mess on your hands. The anxiety that you get from thinking about that task is natural, and probably a little too familiar. Don’t worry though! Rather than focusing on the difficulty of the task, imagine how satisfying it will be to reclaim the space. Now is the time to commit yourself to reorganizing your disaster space.

Lay Out Your Plan
Depending on the size of the job on your hands, the planning stage becomes increasingly important. See past the mess and envision the potential of the space in front of you. Do you want to revert the space into something similar to its original intention, or do you want to reinvent it? You don’t need to answer all of these questions immediately since the answers may become clearer during the process, but it is important to start asking as soon as possible.

Logistically, estimate the amount of time you will need to set aside for the job. Is it reasonable to set aside an hour or two to tackle the space, or is it something that might take up a full weekend? Whatever the case, set up your schedule with room for growth to be safe.

Additionally, you will need to equip yourself sufficiently for the job. Gather cleaning supplies, trash bags, and containers for temporary sorting like laundry baskets or cardboard boxes. If you plan on donating items, it might also be smart to plan out a timeframe for when you would like to transport those items as well. With your plan in place, you won’t get bogged down in the little details when the real work begins.

Establish the Staging Ground
With a solid plan in place, you are ready to tackle even the biggest messes. A vital area during this process is the staging ground. Your staging ground should be an orderly area where you can organize your supplies and potentially start some sorting down the road. Designate a table or counter within the room ideally where you can organize and orient yourself. If this sort of space isn’t reasonably available then find a location in an adjacent room until you can relocate.

Again, depending on the extent of disorganization within the space, it may be worthwhile to do an initial sweep with a garbage bag or with a box where you can gather any obviously misplaced items. Clear as much walking space as possible, throw away broken or unusable items, and rearrange simple items to provide extra working space. With this breathing room established, you should be ready to tackle your junk room in full force.

Remove Everything
That’s right, everything. You may need a lot of space, but work to take everything out of the space that you are trying to clean up in preparation for sorting. Larger jobs will necessitate breaking down the job into smaller parts to make the task more manageable. Still, start with the biggest issue to develop a positive forward momentum.

Rather than cleaning out the entire garage at once, target the top shelf of your workbench, or take everything down that’s hanging on one wall. As you work through this process, take the opportunity to do some deep cleaning on the bare areas. This is most easily done if you can clear out the entire room at once, but it can also be accomplished in chunks. Don’t overwhelm yourself by taking on too much at once.

Organize Your Items
With an empty and clean room, you can focus on organizing everything that you removed. First, sort your items between the broad categories of what you plan on donating or selling, what you need to throw away, and what you plan on keeping. During this step, err towards culling your items so that you have more storage.

Ask yourself when you last used each item, and whether you would miss them if you didn’t have them anymore. Too often, houses become cluttered by things that might be useful in the future, causing homeowners to lose track of the things that they really need.

After this, organize the items that you are keeping between what needs to be returned to the room, what can be relocated elsewhere, and what should go into storage. You should have far fewer things to sort through if you were honest with yourself while purging items.

Consolidate and Refill Your Space
Finally comes the most satisfying step: refilling the room.

Feel free to get creative and reimagine your space, while keeping practicality in mind. Place frequently used items in areas that are easily accessible and develop a system that works well for the space. This is the point where some can get overly excited and start buying new bins and containers, but remember that you can reuse and repurpose containers for storage!

Once everything is in place, train yourself and your family to respect your new system. Should I make it a goal to lose weight this year? Should I spend more time with my family? Maybe read more? Get more organized?

Personal resolutions are great, and this time period is a great opportunity to make moves toward self improvement. However, it seems that too many people are missing an opportunity to make a resolution related to almost definitely their most valuable fiscal investment: their home.

This year, resolve to take better care of your home by practicing good home maintenance! Your home works hard to take good care of you, return the favor by starting with these simple steps.

Know Your Home
An easy way to start off with home maintenance is to make sure you set aside between 1% and 4% of your home’s value for home maintenance. Some call this the “Home Maintenance Rule of Thumb,” this is meant to be an easy-to-follow budgeting strategy to make sure home maintenance tasks aren’t neglected. These smaller maintenance tasks will save you money in the long run, as you avoid the more costly breakdowns that can occur without regular maintenance.

With your fund expectations in mind, you should start your year with a home tour. Just as if you were a new homebuyer, pretend you were on the market again and survey your home, walking from room to room as though it was the first time. What aspects of your home would give you pause? What needs updating? Be as objective as possible to get the most value out of this practice. Make note of things like curling shingles on your roof, check for water damage in your basement or in your attic, and watch for telltale signs of infestation.

Even better, schedule your yearly home maintenance inspection as soon as possible. Home inspectors not only provide an unbiased, fresh perspective on your home, they are trained experts that know where and what to look for. When checking for signs of defects and damage that need your most immediate attention, a home inspector is your best bet to get your home maintenance schedule back on track.

Closely Monitor Your Key Systems
Every house consists of a few key systems that are the most important to a well-functioning home (and the most costly to repair). To ensure a more costly repair or replacement isn’t necessary, prioritize consistent weekly, monthly, or seasonal tasks to mitigate mounting damage.

For your roof, make sure to clean your gutters on a yearly basis. When clogged, water overflow can lead to considerable water damage to your roof, to interior systems, and even to your foundation. Your heating and air conditioning systems are similarly crucial to a comfortable living space. Yearly maintenance should be conducted by a professional prior to each system’s respective season, and homeowners should change filters every 90 days. This simple, 5-minute task is essential to prolonging the lifespan of these systems.

Repair and Maintain Your Appliances
Your appliances have a limited lifespan, but your proactivity can extend that timeframe considerably. Clean your refrigerators, ovens, and dryers every three months, and your dishwashers and washers every month. Monitor ice buildup in your freezer units and always check your pipes for leaks.

To get ahead of safety concerns, regularly check your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors using their “test” buttons, and change batteries as needed. In addition, clogged dryer vents can become fire hazards. Reduce excess debris accumulation as much as possible and be sure to arrange for a professional cleaning once a year.

Add tasks to your home maintenance to-do list according to what your home most needs, and to match your unique situation. With your list set up, you have a headstart on your 2023 home maintenance journey.

For more advice on which home maintenance tasks should be on your radar, contact your local National Property Inspections expert for more information!
1442How to Clean Your Dryer Vent in 3 Easy Stepshttps://npiweb.com/Blog/Posts/PostId/1400/how-to-clean-your-dryer-vent-in-3-easy-stepsCleaning Tips,DIY,Home Maintenance,SafetyMon, 18 Jul 2022 18:29:00 GMT
HOW TO CLEAN YOUR DRYER VENT IN 3 EASY STEPS
July 18, 2022 | Home Maintenance, Safety, DIY, Cleaning Tips | laundry, appliances, ventilation, new homeowner, first-time homeowner

A hidden fire hazard that’s often overlooked is the threat posed by clogged dryer vents. In fact, clogged dryer vents are the cause of 17,000 house fires each year. However, these fires are completely preventable by clearing your dryer’s ventilation systems on a regular basis as doing so not only helps to prevent fires but improves the efficiency of your dryer as well. Luckily, the process of cleaning your dryer vent is an easy one that does not require the assistance of a professional.

Supply Checklist
Before we begin, you’ll want to make sure that you have all necessary supplies on hand. All you’ll need is a vacuum cleaner, preferably one with a hose extension piece, and a cleaning brush. For starters, you’ll want to move your dryer away from the wall to locate the dryer vent. This is usually located near the bottom of the machine either in the back or side of the appliance. From there you’ll want to identify the short exhaust pipe to the machine. Finally, you’ll want to ensure that you unplug the appliance for safety purposes. Now that everything is in position, you’re ready to clean the dryer vent.

Cleaning Your Machine
You can clean a clogged dryer vent in just three easy steps. Step one is to remove the vent pipe from the dryer. The vent pipe is the long foil-like connection piece that goes from the bottom of the dryer to the wall. Simply grab and gently pull the vent pipe away from the vent to release. NOTE: some machines have release clips to unscrew before the vent pipe will give way. If the pipe isn’t coming out easily, make sure to check for a clip. Once the vent pipe has been removed, you’re ready for step two.

The next step of the process involves your first tool, your vacuum cleaner. Now that the vent pipe is off of your dryer take the hose attachment for the vacuum to suction out any residual lint in the machine’s now open vent. This is the most important phase of all three steps as the clearing of lint left clogging the machine is what causes the fire hazard. You’ll want to make sure to do a thorough job. If you’re having trouble removing the excess debris, you’ll need to utilize tool number two, your cleaning brush. With your cleaning brush in hand, do a deep clean of the vent and surrounding areas.

Once the vent is fully clean, you’re ready for step three, reattaching the vent pipe. To fasten the vent pipe to your dryer, gently secure the piping back to the vent (it’s just like step one, but in reverse). From there you’ll want to guarantee that the connection is solid. To do so run the dryer for a few minutes to see if you notice any excess heat coming from the vent pipe. If you do, the connection is not secure. If this occurs, try to straighten the vent pipe over the dryer’s ventilation system and repeat step three.

To recap:

Step 1: Locate and remove the vent pipe from your machine (after unplugging your machine)

Step 2: Clean the open vent on your machine with a vacuum cleaner or brush

Step 3: Re-attach the vent pipe (plug the machine back in for future usage)

It’s that easy!

Order a Home Maintenance Inspection from NPI
Ensure your home is safe from fire hazards. One item you may not have touched in a while is your showerhead. Here’s how you can clean your showerheads this weekend in just a few minutes.

Importance of a Clean Showerhead
There are a few good reasons that you should regularly clean your showerhead. Cleaning will help keep your showerhead working for longer. Over time, showerheads can succumb to mineral buildup, especially if you have hard water. This not only looks unpleasant, but can limit the effectiveness of the head. Mold and grime can also start to collect inside the head and on the nozzles, which can be harmful to your health.

When You Should Replace Your Showerhead
You may find that even a deep cleaning won’t fix your dirty showerhead. In this case, it’s best to just go ahead and buy a new one. You should be replacing your showerhead every seven months anyway, but not everyone remembers to. It can also be time to replace if the nozzles get damaged and the water is plugged.

Scrub the Nozzles
First, you’ll want to scrape off whatever gunk has accumulated on the nozzles. This can be done by taking a toothbrush and scrubbing around the surface of the showerhead. If you have rubber nozzles, be a little gentler so you don’t damage them. You may also be able to knock some of the grime free just by using your finger.

Create a Cleaning Solution
Next comes making your cleaner to break up any leftover residue. For this step, you’ll need a plastic bag, zip ties, baking soda, vinegar, and a wrench or pliers. Carefully remove the showerhead and set it aside. Then take your plastic bag and mix ½ cup of baking soda and add in vinegar until it’s fully mixed together. Then add one cup of water to dilute it. Fully submerge the showerhead for up to four hours. You can do this same process even if you decide to leave the showerhead attached.

Clean the Filter
If you’ve removed the showerhead, be sure to clean the water filter as well. Don’t worry if you’re unsure about where the filter is on your specific shower–you may be able to find it with a simple web search. Typically, the screen sits between where the showerhead and the water pipe connect. You can remove the filter with a pair of tweezers. Then, run it under warm water for a few minutes and use a toothbrush to remove any other debris.

Finishing Touches
After you’ve let the showerhead soak completely, it’s time to reassemble everything. Once you get it screwed back on, wipe the showerhead with a microfiber cloth to clean off any remaining cleaner. Then run hot water through the shower for a few minutes to finish flushing it out. To help cut down on having to deep clean your showerhead, keep a bottle of diluted vinegar handy.

Schedule your NPI home inspection today.
Find an inspector near you to schedule your full home inspection. And while leather is usually more durable, it can get worn down from excessive use. Luckily, a little bit of TLC will keep your couch or chair looking great even longer!

Cuts and Scratches
If you have pets or small children, your furniture may have lots of small cuts in it. The good news is that they’re fairly easy to repair. If the scratch hasn’t completely punctured the material, all you need is some high quality leather conditioner. Start by cleaning the surface and then wait for it to dry. Then continually apply the conditioner until the leather can’t absorb it. Let the last coat sit until it’s dry, and most of the cuts should disappear.

Peeling or Flaking
It’s not uncommon for blended leather to start flaking off after a while. Although you might opt to just replace the piece, you can get a few more years out of it. First, remove any loose flakes that are on the furniture. Then use either a leather paint or leather filler to fill in the area left behind. Seal it off with a coat of finish and let it dry. You can also try to add some texture or design to the patch you’ve made to better hide your work.

Rips
Deeper cuts into the fabric will take a bit more work to repair. You’ll need to create a patch using additional leather or a similar material. To make it easier, clean up the area around the hole so that the edges are smooth. Then place the patch underneath and glue down all the sides. While you can use super glue for this step, it may be best to use a more flexible glue. Next, use a filler material to even out the repaired area and protect it. You might also be able to find a leather repair kit at the store that comes with a patch and a variety of fill colors.

Rough Leather
Along with your leather furniture accruing cuts and tears, it can also get rough and dried out. Using a leather conditioner in this instance is your best option to revive that old material. When choosing a conditioner, look for one that uses lanolin. You can also use coconut oil, Vaseline and alcohol, or mink oil. Continually apply your conditioner of choice until the leather starts to feel smooth and more flexible. For super rough areas, use some sandpaper to even it out.

Faded Spots
If your leather couch or chair sits in a particular sunny spot, it may have lost its color or is starting to. The good news is you don’t have to replace the piece of furniture. All you need is a dye that matches the original color. Then you’ll just need to try and blend the colors together. If you’re not the best furniture artist, there are furniture restoration companies you can hire.

Just a little bit of care with your leather furniture will keep it looking great longer!

Call National Property Inspections Today
NPI helps you keep your home in its best condition, and can even help you make the most of your investment when you buy or sell with a full home inspection. Find your local inspector to make an appointment.
1350How to Protect Your Hardwood Floors from the Coldhttps://npiweb.com/Blog/Posts/PostId/1335/how-to-protect-your-hardwood-floors-from-the-coldCleaning Tips,Home MaintenanceMon, 17 Jan 2022 19:02:00 GMT
HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HARDWOOD FLOORS FROM THE COLD
January 17, 2022 | Home Maintenance, Cleaning Tips | winter, kitchen, living room, floors

Wood floors provide a classic look to your home that really makes it stand out. However, they require special care in order to maintain their uniqueness. As the cold rolls on, it can be the toughest time of the year for your hardwood floors. The good news is with some diligence, your floors will stay looking like new through wintertime.

Changing Temperatures
As the weather starts to cool off, it can cause your floors to change as well. Major differences in temperature make the wooden planks shrink and create gaps. Then when they warm back up, they can crack. If you like to crank the heat inside your home, consider dropping it back a few degrees. That way the difference in temperature won’t be as extreme. It also helps to use a humidifier to keep some moisture in the air that can be absorbed by your floor.

Tracking Things Inside
There’s a whole assortment of debris that you track in your home during winter. Sand, salt, and snow all make a mess of your floors and cause lasting damage. The tiny pieces caught in your boots can scratch up the surface, and if you don’t clean the water and de-icer right away, unsightly stains will start to appear. Using floor mats and placing some by entryways will help keep some of the mess under control. Staying on top of cleaning up after the foot traffic in your home by sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping with a mild cleaner will keep your floors fresh.

Teach and Train
If you have a full house of family, friends, or even pets, try to get everyone on board with taking care of your floors. Kindly ask when they remove their shoes to keep them on the mats you’ve placed down. For pets, it might be a little trickier to get them to cooperate. Training with treats to wait by the door until you’ve cleaned them off is one way to get them to follow the rules. If you have younger children, you can try making a game out of following the rules of staying off the floor with wet shoes.

Preventative Care
Getting ahead of winter problems is the best way to keep your floors in top shape. Polishing your floors will make them stand out more and protect the finish. Also, using a cleaner that’s a bit more eco-friendly will replenish some of the wood’s natural elements. A water-resistant clear coat will help preserve your floor’s look and make it easier to clean melted snow and sand. Repairing and replacing severely worn planks when needed will limit the number of those that have a chance to split or crack from the cold. If your floor was recently installed, it may even be covered by a warranty in case it starts to deteriorate.

You and your wood floors don’t have to dread the cold this year. Just a little bit of work will keep them looking like new for years to come!

Schedule your NPI home inspection today.
Find an NPI inspector near you to schedule your full home inspection. They offer a place for you to relax after a long day and make the perfect spot to entertain guests. As the temperature starts to drop, you might not use your pond as often. To ensure it’s ready come springtime, here’s what you should do.

Should You Turn Your Pond Off?
A frozen pond can look just as beautiful as one in full effect. Especially if you have a large waterfall feature, icicles and snow make the perfect wintery backdrop. However, they can also take a toll on your pond. Ice build-ups make it harder for water to flow through the system and can crack the piping. A pond de-icer or pond heater can help break up these ice dams, but generally it’s better for your pond overall to shut it off for the season if you live where the temperature can hit zero. If you experience more mild winters (50 degrees or above), you’ll likely be fine leaving your pond running.

Clean and Keep Leaves Out
Leaves can turn your beautiful pond into a puddle of muck. In addition, they can also ruin your pond’s pump system and harm any plants or animals that live in the water. Before you cover your pond, remove any stray leaves and debris from the water. Then, set up a pond net to keep the water clean. If you live somewhere that gets heavy snowfalls, a perforated net is better than a solid cover. It’ll keep snow and freezing rain from collecting on the tarp and potentially collapsing it.

Tend to Your Plants
To keep your garden getaway looking pristine, you need to give your plants the right cold-weather care. Hardier plants can typically remain outside all year so long as the pond doesn’t freeze over, but more delicate ones such as lilies should be removed. You can either trim down the foliage or keep them as is and take them inside. In a temperate part of your home, fill up a large tub and place the potted plants in it. This simulated pond will keep them healthy throughout the winter months.

Take Care of Your Fish
Like with your plants, caring for your fish or other animals depends on their breed and the depth of your pond. Larger koi, goldfish, archerfish, and sterlets are just a few of the tougher fish that can withstand lower temperatures in deep water that won’t freeze solid. Other types or even younger fish of these same groups should be removed and cared for inside. For the fish you leave outside, slowly begin acclimating them to the weather. This includes feeding them less often since they won’t be as active. Soon, the fish will naturally enter a kind of hibernation and wake up in the spring.

Clean and Remove Your Filters
To prevent your pond’s filtration system from being damaged by the cold, it’s best to remove it if you aren’t going to run it. Drain the excess water out of the plumbing and clean it out. To keep your fish healthy, use a small recirculating pump. The pump will keep the water oxygenated and help remove harmful gases. If you still want to add some flair to your pond without having it run fully, a bubbler will do the trick.

A professional home inspection with NPI will help keep your home in its best condition, inside and out. Find your local inspector today!
1320Turn Up the Heat: Prepping Your HVAC System for Winterhttps://npiweb.com/Blog/Posts/PostId/1311/turn-up-the-heat-prepping-your-hvac-system-for-winterCleaning Tips,Home Maintenance,SafetyMon, 08 Nov 2021 20:05:00 GMT
TURN UP THE HEAT: PREPPING YOUR HVAC SYSTEM FOR WINTER
November 8, 2021 | Home Maintenance, Safety, Cleaning Tips | fall, winter, HVAC, appliances, ventilation

As the colder months roll in, it’s time to start preparing your home for chilly weather. One item you need to have on your weatherization to-do list is readying your HVAC system. Especially in locations that get sub-zero temperatures, your heating system will start working overtime. But before you flip on your heater, you need to ensure that it’s ready to go.

Change out your air filters.
Prior to turning your heater on, swap out the old air filters. These are one of the most important components of keeping your HVAC running efficiently. Clean air filters will also help if you suffer from allergies by cutting down on the amount of dust that’s recycled through your home. There are certain filters that are less porous and catch more dirt to cut down on allergens. However, these styles can hinder airflow and make your HVAC overheat.

Clear space around your heater and vents.
Being able to easily access your heater is essential to maintaining it. That means moving any furniture, boxes, or kid’s toys that are blocking your path. Keep about a three-foot radius around your heater to allow for maintenance work and prevent anything nearby from catching on fire. If you have floor vents, move items away from them as well, and check that they’re open. That way the heat will be properly dispersed throughout your home.

Clean out furnace burners.
This step is better left to a professional to avoid damaging your burners. When your furnace isn’t being used, dust and rust can collect on the burners. This can lead to costly repairs, and it might also release an unpleasant odor when the heater kicks on. An HVAC technician can clean the burners and replace any that aren’t working correctly. There may still be a slight burning smell within the first few cycles of use. If the scent doesn’t go away, you should call the technician back out.

Check the batteries in your alarm systems.
The risks of fire or carbon monoxide poisoning can increase dramatically during the winter months. Whether it’s from poor maintenance or incorrect installation, running your heater 24/7 can expedite these issues. Change the batteries in your detectors, and test that they’re all working properly. Remember: you should have at least one in each room and one on each floor of your home.

Don’t start out running at 100 percent.
Going from dormant to full blast can also be dangerous for your heater. Even if you’ve properly prepped your system, you run the risk of damaging something. Instead, slowly build up to the desired temperature you want for most of the winter season. Adjust the thermostat a few degrees each day, and keep track of how well your heater is handling the change. This will help you catch issues early on and prolong the life of your HVAC system.

Don’t get dried out.
Aside from your heater, winter can take a toll on your health. Being closed up inside with the heat going sucks the moisture out of the air. You can get sick easier and may notice that your skin gets dry. Your home’s flooring, walls, and other components might also suffer from dry air and begin to crack or warp. A good way to combat this is using humidifiers to replenish the moisture in your home.

Have a professional inspect your system.
Of course, the best way to ensure that your HVAC is ready for winter is having it checked by a professional. They’ll be able to thoroughly test your system and see that all vents inside and outside are working properly. An inspection with NPI can give you the knowledge you need about your home’s major components. Find your local inspector, and schedule an inspection today!
1311
