The bathroom can be an often overlooked area for safety hazards. It may be your home’s smallest room, but the potential for injury can be great. Using a little precaution can help you and your family avoid hazards that can be present in any bathroom:

Electrical Hazards – Accidents happen too frequently with electrical appliances around water. Keeping electric razors, curling irons, and hair dryers away from the shower and running water can alleviate this. Make sure to unplug and safely store these items when not in use. Also, make sure all bathroom outlets are Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) equipped.

Falls and Slips – Slips in the shower and tub happen often and can be prevented by following a few steps. Having a grab bar and non-slip strips in your bathtub or shower can help. Also, having a bath mat with a non-slip backing outside the tub and shower helps. Lastly, always try to keep the bathroom floor dry after every use.

Keeping Children Safe – Kids can get into hazardous materials anywhere in the house, so keeping them out of reach is extremely important. Anything labeled “Poisonous”, “Caution”, “Keep Out of the Reach of Children”, etc… should be locked up away from children. Any medications should be kept in a place where kids can’t get to them and should have their child safety caps on.
